I woke up to the sound of my friends singing obnoxious road trip songs.
“Good morning sunshine.” Alec said, smiling.
“Where are we?” I asked, sitting up straight and stretching out my arms.
“Almost in New York City.” Alec replied. My phone buzzed in my pocket.

New Message
From: Katherine P.
Plan starts now. Meet me in the Gary’s Gasoline washroom. It’s a gas station just outside of NYC, next to an old-fashioned diner. Make sure you’re not being followed.

I groaned, stuffing my phone back in my pocket.
“What is it?” Alec asked.
“Nothing, I just slept with my neck twisted the wrong way. That’s all.” I attempted (and failed) to crack my neck in emphasis. “We should stop for a bathroom break soon. I heard there’s a place nearby- Gary’s Gasoline. It’s near a diner. And while we’re there, we should get gas; it’s cheaper there.” I suggested, hoping I didn’t sound too obvious. Alec nodded.

The next fifteen minutes were filled by an incredibly awkward silence, which was even more awkwardly interrupted by Tegan saying “are we stopping soon? ‘Cause I have to go to the bathroom,” just as we pulled into the gas station parking lot.
“We’re stopping here.” I said. I looked around, just to make sure we were in the right place, and then stepped out of the car. I waited outside for a few minutes while they “relieved themselves” and then went in. The first people I found were Tegan and Elena.
“Hey, guys, why don’t you get us some snacks?” I gave Tegan a ten dollar bill-probably the last allowance I’d ever see. “My treat.” I added.
“Thanks!” Tegan said. I got to the washroom just as Jade was walking out.
“Hey, um, can I ask you something?” I asked.
“Yeah, sure. What is it?”
“I need you to promise me that, no matter what, we’ll stay friends.” Jade looked at me confusedly.
“Of course.”
“No matter what I do.”
“Yeah…what’s this about?”
“Nothing. I just wanted to make sure.” I said, walking around Jade and into the women’s washroom. The first thing I did was check to make sure there was no one in there. There was only one occupied stall-a pair of black high heels. Katherine’s high heels.
“Katherine?” I asked in a small voice, afraid someone might hear me. The stall door swung open.
“Yes?” Katherine’s familiar smile calmed me down a bit. She was holding something that resembled a tranquillizer dart-something similar to what Tegan had stabbed me with earlier this year.
“Your vervain.” She said, handing me the dart. I put it in my jacket pocket. “It’s enough to make him black out.” She added, “Just throw him in the bushes or something.” Katherine shrugged and ran off so fast it seemed as if she’d disappeared into thin air. I walked out into the store and looked around to make sure my friends were still looking for snacks, which they were. Then I slowly made my way back to the van.

Alec was leaning against the van, patiently waiting for me and my friends. With each step I took towards him I felt worse and worse, and by the time I was less than five feet away from him I felt a tear drip down from my eye. No, I commanded myself, you will not cry. Not now, not here. I quickly wiped the tear from my eye and took a deep breath.
“Hey, are you okay?” Alec asked. I nodded.
“Yeah, I’m fine.” I lied, but he could tell from the way my voice cracked that I was lying.
“What’s wrong?”
“I’m sorry.” I said, feeling the tears coming back again.
“Sorry for what?”
“I’m sorry.” I sniffed, wiping my eyes with my shirt sleeve. Alec came forward and pulled me into a hug.
“I’m sorry, I really am.” I sobbed.
“Sorry, for what, love? What is it?”
“I’m sorry for what I’m about to do.”
“What do you mean?” He asked, confused. At that moment, I quickly grabbed the vervain dart out of my pocket and stabbed Alec in the back.
“Ah! What the hell?” I felt him weakening in my arms, and I pulled the dart out of his back and shoved him into the bushes.
“Ugh, don’t cry, you’re gonna make me sad too.” Katherine said, tapping me on the shoulder.
“Thanks for being so sensitive.” I said sarcastically. Katherine rolled her eyes. I opened the back door of the van and dumped all of my friends’ stuff out as Katherine climbed in the driver’s seat and started the engine. Then I joined her in the front seat of the car and she started driving.
“Wait!” I screamed. Katherine rolled her eyes.
“Ugh, what now?”
“I dropped my earring back at the gas station.” I said, quickly removing my left earring and dropping it on the floor. Katherine groaned.
“You have 30 seconds starting now.” I opened the car door and dashed back to the gas station, unsure of exactly what I was doing. Before I knew it, I found myself standing next to Alec’s unconscious body. I leaned over and brushed his dark hair out of his eyes.
“I’ll come back for you, I promise.” I whispered, “I love you.” I lightly kissed his cheek. “I promise.” I heard my friends’ voices coming from out of the store and made a run for the van, jumping in the passenger’s side quickly and putting on my seatbelt.
“Took you long enough.” Katherine said.
“I couldn’t find it.” I looked down at the floor, finding the spot where I’d dropped my earring earlier. “Oh, there it is. It must’ve fallen out when I got in the car.” I picked it up and put it back in my ear. Katherine rolled her eyes.
“Of course it did.” She said in an annoyed tone. “Are you ready now?” I nodded.
“Good.”  Katherine hammered down on the gas pedal and we sped off onto the busy streets of New York City.

  1. Okay!! The game is on!

Well done!! Believe it or not, I liked the sentimental, romantic stuff. Kieyra running back to Alec to tell him she'd come back for hime, (even though he couldn't hear a thing)was a great touch! And very real!!

I also liked the fact that Kieyra gave Tegan "the last allowance I'd ever see"... very nicely done!

Well, you're that much closer to the end. It's just a race to the finish now!!!

    You go girl!!
